Phyllis Anne Mead of Onondaga,
Passed away January 10, 2020 at the age of 82. She was born in Jackson, MI., May 29, 1937, the daughter of Leslie and Blanche (Basnaw) Reed. Phyllis graduated from Hanover Horton High School, attended MSU and later received her accounting certificate from Jackson Community College. She diligently and proudly farmed 155 acres and raised calves. Phyllis was Jackson County’s Young Farmer of the Year and was recognized by MSU for raising calves. She was very busy in the community serving as a member of the Farm Bureau, the Michigan Agricultural Leadership Program, the Michigan Palomino Horse Association, was on the 4-H Horse Council and a 4-H leader in Jackson. Phyllis was the treasurer at Tompkins Township, raised Quarter Horses, worked for Sandy’s Landscape, Mead Brothers Excavating, and Concord Laundromat. Her hobbies included mowing her lawn, mowing, raking and bailing hay, raising cattle, horses, and kids, baking pies and cinnamon rolls, reading, politics and was an avid MSU football and basketball fan.
Phyllis is survived by her husband of 62 years, Walter “Punk” Mead; children, Diane (Dave) Hamilton of Onondaga, Daniel (Vivian) Mead of Albion, Sandra (Mark) Carrick of Charlotte, Jeanne (Bill McAllister) Mead of Onondaga; 9 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; brothers, Tom (Johanne) Reed, John (Sue) Reed; brother-in-law, Dean Tribby. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Donna Tribby, Joann Martin, and Jeanne Sprague.
Funeral services will be 11 am Tuesday January 14, 2020 at the Mills Funeral Home, Shelly-Odell Chapel in Eaton Rapids. Visitation will be held on Monday from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm and Tuesday, one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Springport FFA or Pope Church.
